Types of Admissions
Law Enforcement Admissions and Referral Services
- For abused, neglected, abandoned or runaway children.
- Length of stay is up to 72 hours in police protective custody (excluding holidays and weekends).
- For the protection of the child, no phone or visitation is allowed during this period.
- SRS, social workers and/or law enforcement investigate the situation and determine future placement of the child.
Temporary Care for Private Contractors
- For children in SRS custody.
- For children who are awaiting other placements, such as foster family or group home and/or drug and alcohol treatment. Some children may be preparing for reintegration with family, or independent living.
- Length of stay goal is 30 days.
Voluntary Admissions
- Parents may privately admit their children.
- Service is for families who are experiencing some type of crisis and who are in need of care for their children.
- Fees are based on family income (sliding scale).
- Maximum length of stay is 30 days.
Crossroads for Runaways
- Parents may admit youth or youth may admit themselves into the Children’s Home.
- This up to two week program is run jointly by the Children’s Home and the Kansas Children’s Service League and First Step Counseling. Runaway youth and their families, participate together in intensive counseling provided by Kansas Children Service League and First Step Counseling. During this time the Wichita Children's Home may provide shelter and/or implement home based services.
